Calum Rees is a drummer and percussionist best known for his performances within the contemporary gospel world of music.
With his gutsy, creative, groove based playing, Calum is featured on many acclaimed CD releases across many musical styles and is in much demand as a sessioneer (…much like a musketeer, but for less money and longer hours!). As an accomplished performer, Calum plays in numerous locations across the globe in as many musical situations that come to mind, though he does admit to not having played much polka.
Calum began his drumming in earnest at age 13, when the school funk band was formed in the place of a traditional orchestra: ‘D-Tour’ took second place in a national schools music competition, resulting in a summer tour across Spain and fuelling Calum’s passion for music and performance. At 16 years old he began his professional life in music working as a sound engineer for the prestigious Virgin Studios group, gaining an abundance of knowledge from working with the who’s who of leading worldwide producers and artists. It wasn’t until his twenties that Calum really found his vocation at home behind the drums after gaining a degree in Commercial Music at the University of Westminster in London, UK.
Calum highly regards of the place of music within community and in addition to his own performance and recording schedule can be found teaching at the online Drumeo.com community. He thoroughly enjoys the process of helping people realize their drumming potential, whether it’s using drumming as a team building exercise or in session with one of the few private students Calum commits to teaching each year.
On meeting Calum you quickly realize two things; that he has a tremendous sense of fun and that he is a Welshman! Music and laughter run deep in the blood of every Welshman and Calum is no exception. Whilst he is an incredible technical exponent of the drums, what is also special about Calum is that he is a deeply sensitive soul, and it’s from his compassionate heart that the rhythm flows.
Born and raised in the UK, Calum now lives on the west coast of Canada with his wife & family.
